Description

This 2-hour continuing education course equips EMTs with practical skills to recognize and effectively care for patients with neurodevelopmental and cognitive conditions in the prehospital setting. Participants will learn to identify signs of autism spectrum disorder and adapt communication using tools such as sensory bags and visual communication boards.

The course also reviews key clinical considerations in patients with Down syndrome, including airway differences, increased risk of respiratory complications, and the importance of incorporating caregiver insight into patient assessment. Additionally, EMTs will gain strategies for working with patients with cerebral palsy, including understanding spasticity and its impact on vital signs and transport decisions.

Finally, the course addresses communication techniques for patients with cognitive decline, such as Alzheimer’s disease, emphasizing clarity, patience, and situational awareness. Through case-based discussion and field-relevant strategies, this course prepares EMTs to provide more effective, compassionate, and individualized care on 911 calls."
